There is a filter for fan coil, why should I replace it?
Sure, there is a pre-filter installed on the return port of fan coil. We can easily search for those filter specification from website like below image: MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Values) is 4.
For reference, MERV 9 class filter can prevent PM 10. If the filter is MERV 4 (half of MERV9), I’m afraid it’s hard to purify the air with effectiveness.

Why not use HEPA filters in the fan coil section for air purification?
HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air Delivery. Filter made of HEPA is considered the gold standard when it comes to air purification today.
The obvious benefits of HEPA filters is high efficiency but it need to be replaced constantly.
The most important thing is, the fan coil has a limited air pressure like 30 Pa maximally while HEPA filter's pressure drop starts from 100 Pa. In a word, it’s impossible to use HEPA filters in existing fan coil systems.

How about other technology filters like ESP?
Compared with HEPA filters, ESP air purifier has no issue of high pressure drop and gets higher purifying efficiency versus MERV 4 class pre-filter. Whereas ESP technology is forbidden to apply in the fan coil system due to its byproducts like ozone, which is harmful for people’s health, especially for those who got respiratory disease.
